Kate Johnson has been a performer, private teacher, coach and adjudicator for over two decades and takes a comprehensive approach to developing students as flutists and musicians. She helps young students build a complete foundation and aids older students in reaching their potential through meticulous observation and an explicit approach to tone, embouchere, technique, rhythm, breath support, phrasing, and musical expression. Families and students appreciate her supportive and nurturing teaching style.
Ms. Johnson received a Master’s degree in flute performance from the Crane School of Music at S.U.N.Y. Potsdam and a Bachelor’s degree in flute performance from Washington State University. She studied flute performance at Indiana University with James Pellerite, the former principal flutist of Detroit and Philadelphia Orchestras. She is a current member of the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra and the Federal Way Symphony where she also served previously as principal flute for four seasons. An active chamber musician, she concertizes with the Cascade Sounds Wind Quintet, and has also performed with Village Theatre, Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, Tacoma Symphony, Heritage Symphony, Tacoma Opera, Evergreen City Ballet, Master Chorus Eastside, and numerous other professional ensembles.
